Day 1 Dhaka
The experience of visiting Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is overwhelming. What a city, love it and hate it, and that at the same time. You stand in traffic for hours, but once in the old town, you are amazed. Welcome to the “Rickshaw Capital of the World”. Four hundred thousand of them are in Dhaka alone. Today we’ll explore as much as we can in this fascinating city.
Day 2 Sundarbans
A short flight will take us to Jessore before crossing the river to Narail. This remote village has been fishing for centuries with otters. This is one of the oldest fishing techniques used by only a few villages. Afterwards we’ll go to Bagerhat. Along the way we may be able to stop at a local market (usually held weekly or biweekly in various villages). These are often very colorful markets that are known in this region for the betel nuts that are sold there.
Bagerhat is a kind of open air museum with medieval architectural heritage. Hidden among the green folds of the surrounding countryside of this sleepy city are more ancient mosques and mausoleums than anywhere else in Bangladesh (except Dhaka). Bagerhat was built in the 15th century and is an important cradle of Islam in Bangladesh. The crown jewel is the Shait Gumbad Mosque – a multi-domed medieval masterpiece. In Mongla we will board the Sundarbans cruise.
Day 3 Sundarbans
The boat departs around midnight and sails to the most southeastern part of the forest on the edge of the Kali Nature Reserve in the Bay of Bengal. Early in the morning you set out to see life in the forest awaken. This trip on such a small boat is breathtakingly beautiful, especially early in the morning, so enjoy the peace and beauty.
The Sundarbans is the world’s largest mangrove forest and after breakfast about 3-4 hours of mangrove tracking is on the program. You will find an exotic animal world here, including the Bengal tiger. The Sundarbans even has the highest tiger density of any national park in the world. Nearly 10% of tigers living in the wild live in the Sundarbans! In addition to tigers, there are more than 300 bird species, otters, monkeys, crocodiles, deer, boars and river dolphins.
The cook will put a delicious lunch on the table for you and afterwards you can sit back in a small boat to explore the forest further. You’ll spend the night on board.
Day 4 Dhaka
Enjoy an early morning of the beautiful surroundings and the wild sounds of the forest . After breakfast we visit the largest fishing village in the Sundarbans where people still live in a traditional way. Here we walk for about 2-3 hours. In the afternoon we’ll drive to Jessore and take the evening flight to Dhaka.
Day 5 Sreemangal
Set the alarm early this morning because at 5 o’clock we’ll drive to the tea capital Sreemangal, a city beautifully situated in the middle of hills. On the way here you will visit several tea plantations and a rice factory to see how the locals grow the crops.
In the afternoon we’ll take a 3-4 hour walk. Besides the tea plantations, the area is rich in beautiful rainforest, wetlands, several villages of tea workers, local schools and indigenous tribes such as the Monipuri and Khasiya tribe. Today you will visit it all.
Day 6 Hum Hum waterfall
Today we’ll have an exciting long hike to the famous Hum Hum waterfall, also called Ham Ham. Go on an adventure and experience the true nature of Bangladesh, walking through water, muddy trails and jungle. The waterfall is located in the reserve forest of Razkandi and was just discovered in 2010.
Day 7 Chittagong
Today we cover a considerable distance to Chittagong, which is located in the south, the second largest city in Bangladesh and also the largest port in the country. On the way we make a stop at a war cemetery and a Buddhist monastery and we have lunch in Comilla.
In the afternoon we’ll arrive in Chittagong. If time permits, we will take a boat trip in the afternoon along the shipwreck industry. Chittagong is famous for the shipwrecks that are completely gutted here to resell all their parts.
Day 8 Chittagong
Today we climb one of the highest hills of the Chittagong region via a scenic route that goes off the beaten track. Overnight at Bandarban Hill.
Day 9 and 10: trekking
Bandarban is the most sparsely populated region of the country with a colorful tribal life and also home to Bangladesh’s three highest peaks. Over the next two days we will walk through this area, learn about the local culture and enjoy the local food. This is the region where most of the Mru tribal people live but we also follow a day trail to explore other interesting tribal communities and villages. In the afternoon we’ll take a boat trip on the Sangu River.
Day 11 Dhaka
In the morning after breakfast we drive to Dhaka. On the way we’ll visit the ancient capital sonar. We’ll then bring you to your hotel: end of service.
