Panam City and Sonargaon are two historic sites located in the Narayanganj district of Bangladesh. These two sites are closely connected, as Panam City was once a prosperous trading center that served as a
gateway to Sonargaon, the former capital of Bengal.
Panam City was established in the late 19th century during the British colonial era. It quickly grew into an important trading center for jute, cotton, and other goods. The city was designed with a grid-like pattern of streets and lanes, and its buildings featured a mix of architectural styles, including European and Bengali.
Today, Panam City is a popular tourist destination and is known for its well-preserved historic buildings. Many of the buildings have been restored and converted into museums, art galleries, and other cultural attractions.
Sonargaon, has a much longer history. It was once the capital of the Bengal region and played an important role in the development of Bengali culture and civilization. The city is known for its impressive architectural heritage, which includes ancient mosques, tombs, and other historic buildings. One of the most notable landmarks in Sonargaon is the Panam Nagar, a historic street that features a row of beautifully preserved 19th-century mansions. The street is lined with trees and is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
Both Panam City and Sonargaon are important cultural and historical sites in Bangladesh. They offer visitors a glimpse into the rich history and heritage of the Bengal region and are a testament to the enduring legacy of Bengali culture and civilization.
